What this figure is — and isn't

It is an allocation of M+A Matting's 2025 corporate inventory (GHG Protocol, not yet third-party assured) to your purchase, per square metre produced. It is not a product-specific Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and has not been third-party verified at product level. It is suitable for supplier questionnaires and spend-based or average-data Scope 3 reporting under the GHG Protocol. If you need a product-level PCF or EPD, contact us.

Scope 1, 2, 3 — explained in two minutes

The GHG Protocol sorts every company's emissions into three "scopes". The scopes are always from one company's point of view — the same tonne of CO₂ is Scope 1 for the company that burns the gas and Scope 3 for the company that buys the product.

Scope 1 — you burn it

Fuel burned in your own boilers, ovens and vehicles; refrigerant leaks. You control the source directly.

Scope 2 — you buy the energy

Electricity, steam, heat or cooling you purchase. The emissions happen at the power plant, but you caused them.

Scope 3 — everything else in your chain

15 categories covering what you buy (category 1), transport (4), waste (5), travel (6), and what happens to your products after sale (11, 12). For most companies this is 80–95% of the total.

Green boxes are what M+A Matting has already caused by the time the mat reaches you — the "cradle-to-gate" footprint. White boxes happen on your side; we estimate them with a life-cycle assessment so you can see the whole picture, but you should count them only once.

Which option should I choose?

A supplier or customer sent me a questionnaire asking for the carbon footprint of what I bought. Tick the first three (the "Supplier questionnaire" preset). That is the cradle-to-gate figure and goes in your Scope 3, category 1.
I am doing a full life-cycle comparison between products. Tick all five. Make sure you compare against other products on the same basis (same wash assumptions, same lifetime).
I only want to know the impact of the factory itself. Tick the first two ("Factory only"). This is the smallest, and the part under M+A Matting's direct control.
I wash the mats myself / I use a rental-laundry service. Do not tick the use phase — that energy is already in your own Scope 1/2 or your service provider's inventory.

How were the per-m² factors calculated?

M+A Matting's 2025 inventory (Prestige Carpets BV and M+A Matting UK Ltd, operational control, GHG Protocol Corporate and Scope 3 Standards, calculated on the Tapio platform) is divided by the square metres produced in 2025 in each entity. The use-phase factor (30.66 kg CO₂e/m²) and the end-of-life factor (1.23 kg CO₂e/m²) come from a life-cycle assessment of the mat's service life and are the same for both entities.

Why is the use phase so large?

A heavy-duty entrance mat is washed many times over several years. Each wash uses hot water and drying energy. Over the mat's life this adds up to roughly three times the emissions of making it. That is why the biggest reduction lever for everyone in the chain is washing less often and at lower temperatures — and why we show the figure even though it isn't ours to certify.

Can I use this for CSRD / SBTi / a tender?

Yes, as supplier-provided average data for Scope 3 category 1. The GHG Protocol's data hierarchy ranks it above spend-based estimates and below supplier-specific product data (EPD/PCF). State the source as "M+A Matting 2025 corporate inventory, per-m² allocation" in your methodology. For a verified product-level declaration, ask your M+A contact.

Methodology & basis of the numbers

Source inventory

M+A Matting's corporate greenhouse-gas inventory for calendar year 2025, covering the two European legal entities: Prestige Carpets BV (plants in Ronse and Fleurus, Belgium) and M+A Matting UK Ltd (plants in Manchester and Milton Keynes, United Kingdom). Consolidation under the operational control approach of the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard; value-chain categories per the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard. Calculated on the Tapio carbon-accounting platform. Group total 2025: 111,442 tCO₂e.

Boundary

Scope 1 (stationary and mobile combustion, refrigerants), Scope 2 (purchased electricity, market-based), Scope 3 categories 1–9 (purchased goods and services, capital goods, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream and downstream transport, waste, business travel, commuting, leased assets), 11 (use of sold products) and 12 (end-of-life). Categories 10, 13, 14 and 15 are not applicable.

Allocation to your purchase

Each entity's emissions per category are divided by the square metres of matting that entity produced in 2025 (Belgium 1,348,099 m²; United Kingdom 1,278,067 m²) to give a factor in kg CO₂e per m². The group average weights the two entities by production. Your figure is the factor multiplied by the m² you enter. The method is therefore a corporate average allocation, independent of product type.

Use phase and end of life

These stages happen after the mat leaves our plants. They are estimated from a life-cycle assessment of the mat's service life: 30.66 kg CO₂e/m² for washing over the mat's lifetime and 1.23 kg CO₂e/m² for disposal by incineration. The same factors are applied in both entities.

Emission factors

ecoinvent, UK DEFRA 2024, ADEME Base Carbone, CO2emissiefactoren.nl, CO2logic, and product LCAs, as configured in Tapio. Grid factors: Belgium 0.1414 and UK 0.20705 kg CO₂e/kWh. GWP-100.

Limitations & proper use

Average, not product-specific. A heavy rubber-backed logo mat and a light nylon mat receive the same per-m² factor. For product-level data request a Product Carbon Footprint (ISO 14067) or EPD.

First-party data. The inventory is prepared by M+A Matting and has not been verified by an independent third party at product level. The statement is a supplier declaration, not a certificate.

Data quality. Some upstream factors are generic (e.g. rubber compound ingredients) and are being refined; figures may be restated when the inventory is updated.

Suitable for: supplier questionnaires, Scope 3 category 1 reporting as "supplier average data" under the GHG Protocol data hierarchy, CSRD/ESRS E1 value-chain estimates, tender documentation where average supplier data is accepted.

Not suitable for: "carbon neutral" or offset claims, product labelling, comparison against EPDs prepared on a different basis, or as a substitute for your own Scope 1/2 data on washing.

Double counting. If you or a laundry contractor wash the mats, the use-phase energy is already in your (or their) Scope 1/2. Do not add the use-phase line as well.

Version & contact
